Senator David Johnson's Leadership Credentials & Public Service Record:
I served honorably as an officer in the US Air Force and Reserve (1986 – 1994) and currently serve as Chair of the Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. My voting record in support of military troops – state and national – is 100%.
I am a past Director on the National Forest Advisory Board, appointed by USDA Secretary “Sonny” Perdue, in 2018. I also serve as President of the Johnson Siding Black Hills Volunteer Fire District.
I am the immediate past President of the Rapid City Chapter of the South Dakota Right to Life Organization. My voting record in support of Pro-Life issues is 100%.
I attended Rapid City’s public schools from kindergarten through graduation from Central High School Class in 1979. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering from the SD School of Mines in 1983, then continued with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of South Dakota in 2003.
I am a 45-year licensed commercial pilot and current FAA Flight Instructor.
In 1980, my father and I opened a successful tree care and tree nursery business in western SD (that’s why I’m called “The Tree Guy”). I became the sole owner/operator in 1991. The people of SD have been loyal, supportive customers of my family’s business operations for nearly half a century.
My wife, Karen, and I have been married since 1986. We are prayerful regulars at our church home, the 1st Congregational Church in Rapid City. Our three grown daughters are now married themselves; their families have provided Karen and I with four beautiful, spirited grandkids. We are truly blessed.
