David Johnson's Leadership Credentials & Public Service Record:
Served honorably as an officer in the US Air Force and Reserve (1986 – 1994) and served 6 Years on the legislature’s Veterans Committees, with the last 4 years as Chair of the Senate Committee of Military & Veterans Affairs. His voting record in support of military troops – state and federal – is 100%.
Past Director on the National Forest Advisory Board, appointed by President Trump’s Agriculture Secretary “Sonny” Perdue in 2018. Also serves on the Board and as Immediate Past President of the Johnson Siding Black Hills Volunteer Fire District.
Past President of the Rapid City Chapter of the South Dakota Right to Life Organization. Senator Johnson’s voting record in support of Pro-Life issues is 100%.
David attended Rapid City’s public schools from kindergarten through graduation from Central High School Class in 1979. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering from the SD School of Mines in 1983, then continued with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of South Dakota in 2003.
Senator Johnson is a 46-year licensed commercial pilot and current FAA Flight Instructor.
In 1980, opened a successful tree care and tree nursery family business in western SD, earning the moniker “The Tree Guy.” The people of SD have been loyal, supportive customers of the family business operations for nearly half a century.
